History[]
Pre-1914[]

The Great Depression (1929-1940)[]
The Anti-Hitlerian War (1939-1946)[]
The war ended for Osnabrück (Westphalian: Ossenbrügge) on 4 April 1945, when the XVII Corps of Montgomery's Second Army entered the city with little resistance.
Cold War[]
The British swore never to get done over by Germany or see the Dutch get crushed again, so they set up the pro-Western puppet state of Osnabrück. The Allies quickly started the rebuilding of the region, but it would last for many years due to the legacy of the fierce fighting in the region.
2,500 British troops would arrive in the town, with a major infantry base, logistic base and a major cavalry base operating there between 1945 and 2008.
The 59,867 strong British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) arrived in 1949, but the force was reduced in strength to 53,000 soldiers in 1967.
150 New Englander and 150 Canadian troops are still stationed in there and first arrived in 1947.
Osnabrück ganed home rule in 1948 and gradually gained substantial home rule by 1953. Dominion status was granted in 1972.
1990s[]
The BAOR left in 1996. Many British troops happily settled in Osnabrück and some Osnabrückers also happley settled in the UK.
2,500 French and 250 Texan troops were station there between 1997 and 1998.
Life today[]
Some of the local council's seats have fallen to a pro-German unity party in 2009. There has been a growing clamour for German reunification since 2008.
There is still a modest desire for the nation to remain in the British Commonwealth.
Reinhard Scholz took over the role of Governor general when Hilary James Wedgwood Benn rejoined UK politics in 2016.
Economy[]
The most important building in Bad Iburg is Schloss Iburg above the town. It is a complex of a castle which was the residence of the bishops of Osnabrück for six hundred years and a former monastery of the Order of Saint Benedict.
A substantial economic factor for Melle is the wood processing industry. Further important branches are metal, food, and plastics processing. The Tetra Werke Company\Tetra Holding GmbH was founded in Melle. In recent years Melle has more and more become a logistics site along the A30 motorway.
Offshore banking and selling aviation insurance policies became a big money earner after the millennium.
There are two astronomical observatories in the surrounding of Melle providing guided tours for the public. The EXPO 2000 observatory in Melle-Oberholsten runs the largest Newtonian telescope used for public observation.
